GROUND UP GROOMSMEN STYLE GUIDE – SHIRTS

John here! Gentlemen, welcome back to our Ground Up Groomsmen Style Guide. This is a series of posts where I discuss the often overlooked aspects of wardrobe styling for the groom & groomsmen on your wedding day. With minimal effort and just a little knowledge, you and your boys can all look like James-freakin’-Bond at your wedding. Click these links if you missed Part 1 or Part 2.

For this episode, we’re discussing shirts and how to find the proper fit. Just like in Part 2 where we talked about trim fit trousers, the same rules apply here! Find a trim fit shirt. I don’t necessarily mean tight, I just mean how the shirt is cut in a way that tapers in towards the waist to avoid looking baggy. This will also mean the arm holes are cut a little smaller, higher and narrower.

Here’s an example.

Check out this picture of me wearing two different shirts that are the same size.  Let me repeat that; the shirts are the same size, they’re just cut differently. The shirt on the left makes me look about 20 pounds heavier because it isn’t cut properly for my body. It looks oversized and baggy, the sleeves are too wide and the arm holes are too low. It has no shape built into it whatsoever and it billows out at the waist. The shirt on the right is a trim fit.  It’s the exact same size, but the difference is the extra billowing material isn’t there.  It fits my body much better, but notice it’s not tight.  It’s also worth mentioning that my pants trim fit well. Read Part 2 to learn more about that.

It’s crazy to think that just by choosing the right clothing that fits your body type better; you can visually appear 15-20 pounds lighter!

Your wedding day is important and it’s the day you need to look your best because everyone is there for you and you’ll be photographed like crazy. When the blur of your wedding day ends and all is said and done, the photos will be all that’s left to remind you of one of the biggest days of your life. You’ll want to look back on your wedding photos knowing you put in the effort to look your best for your new bride.
