When my super awesome friend and fellow photographer came to us and asked for a 22nd birthday cake smash we were totally down for the idea. Since we mainly shoot weddings nowadays this was a nice change of pace. John has some amazing lighting skills so it’s no wonder Rachel picked him to shoot this session for her. We seriously had so much fun shooting this. Can you believe this cake is gluten-free? Anyone who knows cakes knows that they are VERY hard to make standing that high up. This cake was real pineapple and so dang delicious. Did I mention that after we shot the session 3 of us had a cake fight? Yea, that happened in my living room. It was my 5-year-olds idea!
I have had a TON of questions of people asking how this shoot was done and what was used to make this shoot happen. So here you go!
I got these balloons on Amazon They are a PAIN to keep still when shooting but as you can see they make the shot so it was totally worth it.
Amazon has a huge array of glitter backgrounds. This one won’t break the bank
We had quite a few dress changes. The one in the top image is from Windsor and the other black dress is from Amazon
Now on to all the technical stuff for all of you “Techies” out there…..
We photographed this using a variety of light setups. For some of the images, we had two Elinchrom Strobes on the background to get it pure white, while using a third Elinchrom through a large Rotalux octabank for the main light. For most of what you see here, we went back & forth with a single beauty dish and a single large octabank.
There you have it! Please feel free to comment if you have any other questions about our shoot!
Cheers!
